Privacy

Facebook:
Site activity information. We keep track of the actions you take on Facebook, such as adding a friend, becoming a fan of a Facebook Page, joining a group or an event, creating a photo album, sending a gift, poking another user, indicating you “like” a post, attending an event, or authorizing an application. In some cases you are also taking an action when you provide information or content to us. For example, if you share a video, in addition to storing the actual content you uploaded, we might log the fact you shared it.

Access Device and Browser Information. When you access Facebook from a computer, mobile phone, or other device, we may collect information from that device about your browser type, location, and IP address, as well as the pages you visit.

Cookie Information. We use "cookies" (small pieces of data we store for an extended period of time on your computer, mobile phone, or other device) to make Facebook easier to use, to make our advertising better, and to protect both you and Facebook. For example, we use them to store your login ID (but never your password) to make it easier for you to login whenever you come back to Facebook. We also use them to confirm that you are logged into Facebook, and to know when you are interacting with Facebook Platform applications and websites, our widgets and Share buttons, and our advertisements. You can remove or block cookies using the settings in your browser, but in some cases that may impact your ability to use Facebook.

Information we receive from third parties:

Facebook Platform and Facebook Connect. We do not own or operate the applications that you use through Facebook Platform (such as games and utilities) or the websites that you interact with through Facebook Connect. We refer to them as “Facebook-enhanced” applications and websites because they use our Platform to provide you with social features. Whenever you authorize a Facebook-enhanced application or website, we will receive information from them, including information about actions you take. In some cases, in order to personalize the process of connecting, we may receive a limited amount of information even before you authorize the application or website.

Information from other websites. We may institute programs with advertising partners and other websites in which they share information with us:

- We may ask advertisers to tell us how our users responded to the ads we showed them (and for comparison purposes, how other users who didn’t see the ads acted on their site). This data sharing, commonly known as “conversion tracking,” helps us measure our advertising effectiveness and improve the quality of the advertisements you see.

- We may receive information about whether or not you’ve seen or interacted with certain ads on other sites in order to measure the effectiveness of those ads.

If in any of these cases we receive data that we do not already have, we will “anonymize” it within 180 days, meaning we will stop associating the information with any particular user. If we institute these programs, we will only use the information in the ways we explain in the “How We Use Your Information” section below.

Information from other users. We may collect information about you from other Facebook users, such as when a friend tags you in a photo or video, provides friend details, or indicates a relationship with you. You can limit who can see that you have been tagged in a photo or video – which we refer to as photos or videos “of me” – in your privacy settings.

3. Information You Share With Third Parties

We take steps to ensure that others use information that you share on Facebook in a manner consistent with your privacy settings, but we cannot guarantee that they will follow our rules. Read the following section to learn more about how you can protect yourself when you share information with third parties.

Sharing information on Facebook. We designed our privacy settings to enable you to control how you share your information on Facebook. You should review the default privacy settings to make sure they reflect your preferences. Here are some specific things to remember:

- You can control the visibility of most of the information you share on Facebook through the privacy settings you select.

- Certain categories of information such as your name, profile photo, list of friends and pages you are a fan of, gender, and networks you belong to are considered publicly available, and therefore do not have privacy settings. (We will soon stop using regional networks, but your geographic region will still be considered publicly available). You can limit the ability of others to find this information on third party search engines through your search privacy settings.

- Some of the content you share and the actions you take will show up on your friends’ home pages and other pages they visit.

- Even after you remove information from your profile or delete your account, copies of that information may remain viewable elsewhere to the extent it has been shared with others, it was otherwise distributed pursuant to your privacy settings, or it was copied or stored by other users.

- You understand that information might be re-shared or copied by other users.

- Certain types of communications that you send to other users cannot be removed, such as messages.

- When you post information on another user’s profile or comment on another user’s post, that information will be subject to the other user’s privacy settings.

- If you use an external source to publish information to Facebook (such as a mobile application or a Connect site), you should check the privacy setting for that post, as it is set by that external source.

I am using a custom setting for private settings. I have set my profile so that only Texas A&M students can see it and have not allowed for a public search.

This Policy covers our family of companies, a partial list of which is contained at the end of this Policy. Please read this Policy carefully.

* We require companies working for us to protect information. They agree to use it only to provide the services we ask them to perform for us.

Q. What choices do I have about information sharing and use?
A. We offer you the following three choices about sharing information that identifies you:

Choice #1. Third party sharing: You may tell us not to share information about you with non-financial companies outside of our family of companies. Even if you do tell us not to share, we may do so as required or permitted by law. Also if you have authorized us to share information in connection with a particular product or service, we will continue to share information about you in connection with that product or service. For example, you might have a credit card with one of our airline, retail or university partners that offers rewards programs.

and

Choice #2. Affiliate sharing: You may tell us not to share the following information about you within our family of companies:

* Information from your applications to be used to determine your eligibility, such as your income.
* Information from consumer credit reports, such as your credit history.
* Information from sources used to verify information you provide us, such as outstanding loans or employment history.

Even if you do tell us not to share, we may share other types of information within our family. For example, we may share name and address, information about transactions or balances with us, as well as survey results.

and

Choice #3. Affiliate marketing. You may tell us to limit our family of companies, such as our credit card, and securities affiliates, from marketing their products and services to you if you do not have an account or business relationship with them. These marketing offers are based on your personal information that our affiliate receives from another Chase company; this information includes your income, your account history with us and your credit history with us. Your choice to limit these marketing offers will apply for five years from when you tell us your choice. After five years, you will receive a renewal notice from us that will allow you to continue to limit our affiliate marketing.

I have not changed my settings except that I am now a complete “online customer” meaning I do not receive bills in the mail, but rather online. If I wanted to change my privacy settings, I’d have to call, send a letter or submit them online.

Expanding a business from a physical location to the web isn’t an easy process but the result will be worth it. Your store will be “open” continuously and your customers will be able to buy products at any time of the day. Your work will also become more flexible and you can reach out to a broader range of customers. I have researched different e-commerce software and have made a few recommendations for you.

In my opinion, Magento is the program of choice. It includes feature-rich with marketing, search engine optimization and catalog-management tools. It is also the most aesthetically pleasing on the front-end and is very well organized and clean within the administrative sections. It is also the best program for adding layouts and add-ons. Mangeto offers more than 50 payment gateways so that you can choose the best option for you and your customers. The problems with Magento include slower page loads and response time. However, the benefits of using this software outweigh the problems.

My second choice would be VirtureMart used with Joomla! for a content management system that provides an easy-to-use front end. It is widely used by web users for a low to medium traffic level sites. VirtureMart offers many features and is highly customizable using plug-ins, components, templates and modules. The set-up process is very fast with Joomla. The program allows multiple functions for products and offers multiple payment gateways. Some problems with VirtueMart include that Joomla is required for it to run, so the administrator must know the Joomla program.

The third option is osCommerce, which is easy to set up and offers many out-of-the box features. osCommerce is very popular and boasts a large fan-base. It also provides a large number of plug-ins. Difficult to understand at first, after spending some time with it, it is very stable and provides many options. Some of the problems include that the code layouts are not very clean and it is difficult to use at first.

As for business analytics software, Google Analytics is the best out there. It is easy to access, easy to use and completely free. The features are remarkable allowing the user to measure the success of advertising, visual data with the use of charts and mapping, receive reports, and share data across the business. It also allows the use of other tools, including AdWords, AdSense, Website Optimizer, Webmaster Tools among others. It is widely used and very user-friendly. It’s a great way to see how the online portion of your business is doing.

I look forward to working with you and hope that my advise is helpful. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Bre Cleary

Lab 14 -Sorry it's late, but we did it!

Functions of Skype
•On Phone: You can chat but can’t do video chat, you can call people, you can view the call history, you can view your contacts, and you can see if people are online.
•On desktop PC: You can chat and can do video chat unlike on a cell phone, you can call people, you can view the call history, you can view your contacts, and you can see if people are online. There are also options for free video calls, sending instant messages and files unlike on the phone where you can’t send files.
•On Laptop PC: You can chat and can do video chat unlike on a cell phone, you can call people, you can view the call history, you can view your contacts, and you can see if people are online. There are also options for free video calls, sending instant messages and files unlike on the phone where you can’t send files. On the lap top, there is more access for portability than with a desktop PC.

Functions Compared to Other Technologies
•Skype is free to other Skype services, but when you use a cell phone there are often limitations or excess charges. Other technologies may charge you to use their services.
•Gmail chat allows you to chat, but you have to be online (Mozilla browser, or other browser up), whereas with Skype, you can just have Skype up.
•On your phone, you have to open and run the Skype application in order to receive Skype messages and phone calls.
•On Mac books you can use Ichat which only has video and not the chat function, unlike Skype which has both.
•Skype seems to be more convenient and more accessible, it stream-lines everything in relation to other technologies.
oSkype allows you to send text messages directly from Skype.
oSkype allows you to forward a call to your mobile.
oSkype allows you to set up an online number.
oSkype allows you to set up a Skype credit or subscription for your convenience.
The rates start at $.021 a min, or you can do $18 for 3 months, or $60 for 12 months with an online number.
If you are offline and want calls forwarded to your phone, then that costs $.021 per min.
There are also Unlimited or Pay-as-you-Go plans for phones and mobiles
•An innovative technology that has come out in recent years and is utilized by Skype and a few other technology companies is the ability to make free video calls and video chats.
•Skype allows you to send and receive instant messages and files.
•You can make free calls Skype to Skype.
oHowever, it seems much easier to just pick up a cell phone and call someone than to access Skype to make a phone call.
oAlthough, it can be cheaper to use Skype instead of a cell phone, especially if you are communicating oversees where the rates become more expensive.
•Some difficulties in using video chat are the different qualities of cameras that are used.
•In certain areas, you might lose reception and have a call dropped because of your connection to the internet.

http://gaymer.org/

Threads:
Gaymer and I are featured in an article about game homophobia! (http://www.gaymer.org/newforum/index.php?showtopic=24968)

There is a moderator for this forum. They are discussing an article in which game homophobia was discussed. The founder of Gaymer.org is quoted in this article and discusses how gamers don’t have the option to play a gay character and that the gaming industry is primarily heterosexual. The comments are mostly positive, congratulating that gaymer.org was quoted in the article and for standing up for the gaymer community. There is no debate or argument, besides the article itself.

Happy Birthday to Gaymer (http://www.gaymer.org/newforum/index.php?showtopic=1243)

The founder of the website, known as name “gaymer” is the moderator and the admin for the forum. He discusses how gaymer.org is one year old and how and why he created the site. Users comment that they enjoy the community and that is kind of a gayming “home.” Many discussed how they felt so comfortable there and that everyone was friendly.

I got banned because I’m gay (http://www.gaymer.org/newforum/index.php?showtopic=21649)

There is no moderator, the person who started the thread is actually a guest. He discusses how he got banned from site because he mentioned that he was a gay player. He immediately got dismissed from the site for a reason that is not true. Then, another guests replies pretty much making fun of him and saying “GTFO punk, you can’t be on CX!” another guests posts that it is likely that he got banned because of his attitude and not his sexuality but the person who was banned seems to disagree. They argue for a while. Another gaymer says that homophobes will be everywhere but that his attitude is unacceptable and that he agrees that he should’ve been banned. Others agree and the forum ends.

LAB 9
Shakira (Pop Latino):
Pandora

1. Te Llevare Al Cielo by Mana
2. Say It Right by Nelly Furtado
3. Te Aviso Te Anuncio by Shakira
4. Labios Compartidos by Mana
5. Poker Face by Lady Gaga

Last FM

1. La Oreja de Van Gogh by Rosas
2. Say It Right by Nelly Furtado
3. Nada puede cambiarme by Paulina Rubio
4. Volverte A Ver by Juanes
5. Canela by Fey

When typing in “Shakira,” The recommendations on Pandora and Last FM are very similar probably because we were attempting to find Pop Latino music on American sites. There might not be much of a variety for this type of music on these sites. The same song, “Say It Right” by Nelly Furtado was chosen on both sites.

George Strait (Country):
Pandora

1. George Strait – Ocean Front Property
2. Brooks and Dunn – Neon Moon
3. Alan Jackson – Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow
4. Garth Brooks – Friends In Low Places
5. Tracy Lawrence - Alibis

Last FM

1. George Strait – Check Yes Or No
2. Mark Chesnutt – She Was
3. John Michael Montgomery – The Little Girl
4. Tracy Lawrence – I See It Now
5. Brooks and Dunn – Neon Moon

Juanes (Rock Latino):
Pandora

1. Juanes – La Camisa Negra
2. Shakria – Estoy Aqui
3. Mana - Si No Te Hubieras Ido
4. Bacilos – Caraluna
5. Juanes – Nada

LastFM

1. Juanes – Que Pasa
2. Reik – Noviembre sin ti
3. Julieta Vengas – Andar conmigo
4. Bacilos – Caraluna
5. Fonseca - Arroyito

Both of these sites offered similar results for each of the artists. They were both consistent and reliable, providing other songs that had a relevant theme or genre.

The Go-Go's (punk/rock):
Pandora

1. Pat Benatar “Love is a Battlefield”
2. Blondie “Call Me”
3. Duran Duran “Hungry Like The Wolf”
4. Belinda Carlisle “Mad About You”
5. The Go-Go’s “Tonite”

Last FM

1. Animotion “Obsession"
2. Romeo Void “Never Say Never"
3. Altered Images “Insects”
4. Belinda Carlisle “Heaven Is A Place On Earth”
5. The Romantics “What I Like About You”

On Pandora you can say what you do and do not like, and you can create various playlist stations, and you can also purchase the music. On LastFM I feel like they just gave you a wide variety of artists, but you couldn’t personalize them a lot. However, they do give you the option to share the track, tag the track, or purchase it. LastFM offers similar options, but you have to have the patience to learn about the sites options.

Pandora gave me a bunch of artist suggestions that were popular and I already knew. I am not a big Go-Go’s fan per-say, but I recognized all of the artists, and I liked the music the site suggested. If you just want to create a fun playlist of your favorite bands/genres, this is a good site to use.

LastFM gave me an interesting variety of choices. Many of these artists I had not heard of, but when I listened to them I liked their suggestions for the most part. I appreciate that they showed me music I wouldn’t normally have found. If you want to discover new or less-known artists, this might be a better option.

Beyonce (Pop):
Pandora

1. Irreplaceable (Beyonce)
2. Miss Independent (Ne-Yo)
3. Obsessed (Mariah Carey)
4. Bootylicious (Destiny’s chilid)
5. Naughty Girl (Beyonce)

Last FM

1. If I were a boy (Beyonce)
2. Pon de Replay (Rihanna)
3. Obvious (Le Toya)
4. Comeback (Kelly Rowland)
5. Emotion (Destiny’s Child)

Searching the artist Beyonce on Pandora and Last FM brought back meaningful results. On Pandora I was suggested two songs from beyonce herself, “irreplaceable” and “naughty girl”. Also three other female artist were suggested, all which are considered to be R&B or hip hop, but all the songs of the artist would be considered hip hop. The other three artists were Ne-Yo with “Miss Independent”, Mariah Carey with “Obsessed”, and Destiny’s Child with “Bootylicious”.

On Last FM my search for beyonce only contained on song from her, which was “If I were a boy”. The other four suggestions were all R&B artist and all females. The only difference in the suggestions from Last FM was one of the suggested artist was highly known in the U.S. but is from another country, making her an international artist, this artist was Rihanna with “Pon de Replay”. The other three artists were Kelly Rowland with “Comback”, and two others which are related. Destiny’s child with “Emotion”, and Le Toya with “Obvious”, who was originally a member of destiny’s child.

Lil Wayne (Rap):
Pandora

1. Mr. Carter- Lil Wayne
2. Rubber Band Man – T.I.
3. Swagga Like Us – Jay-Z & T.I.
4. Lollipop Remix – Nicki Minaj & Lil Wayne
5. Pussy, Money, Weed – Lil Wayne

Last.FM

1. Bust It Baby Part 2 (feat. Neyo) –Plies
2. Cali Love – Tyga
3. S.A.N.T.A.N.A. – Juelz Santana
4. Long Lap Dance – T-Pain
5. Dope Boy- Gorilla Zoe

“Personalization Options” Comparison:

Pandora allowed the listener to adjust volume, pause, or forward their music to the next recommended song. I felt like Pandora was lot more “beginner friendly” because it displayed a clean, organized layout. It also featured the ability to create a new station, share music/stations with friends, edit your current station, like or dislike a song, purchase and/or bookmark a song, explore music through your mobile phone or a video series, and read about the artist and/or type of music you were listening to.
Last.FM featured a lot of the same personalization options as Pandora, such as the ability to start a new station, like or dislike a song, forward to the next recommended song, adjust the music volume, share, tag, or buy a track that you were interested in, and research artists and their music. However, Last. FM did a more extensive job at listing artists, stations, and events related to the music station the listener created. Last.FM also allowed users to post comments and/or slideshows about certain tracks. I felt that one could not use Last.FM without any previous experience with “internet radio”.

“Recommendations under LIL WAYNE” Comparison:

Pandora’s recommendations consisted of more mainstream music and repeated a lot of the same artists, including the searched artist (Lil Wayne) himself. Last.FM, however, suggested a lot of off-the-wall artists and songs that I had never heard of before. It seems like Pandora matched a lot of popular music with my artist search whereas Last.FM dug into a deeper, “less well-known” song and artist library. I think it would depend on the listener’s personal preference as to whether or not he or she would like to hear the artist(s) they searched for and related popular songs or whether they would wish to explore a variety of different and less popular artists and songs.

YouTube:

I chose to view one of my favorite PSA’s for Special Olympics on YouTube. The video immediately started playing and did not have to stop to load or buffer. YouTube does a great job at categorizing and organizing videos, from Sports to Entertainment and even “What’s being watched now.” You can create your own personal account and upload videos yourself or save the ones you like to your account. There weren’t any advertisements in the video I chose, or even ads around it, but more popular videos will have advertisements before the clip and around the video screen. A user can make it a favorite, add it to a playlist or even share it on Facebook, Twitter and Myspace. Comments can be posted on each video and users can even monitor the videos by flagging it if deemed inappropriate. YouTube has numerous problems with people uploading videos illegally.

Hulu:

On Hulu, I chose to view an episode of one of my new favorite shows, “Shark Tank.” The episode loaded quickly, around 2 seconds. An advertisement then popped up, explaining “The following program is brought to you by Axe Instinct” and a short commercial of about 30 seconds followed. The episode never loaded again or buffered, but I usually have different experiences at home. Normally, I have to let episodes load for at least a minute before watching them or I’ll have to wait while they buffer during the episode. Advertisements of about 15-20 seconds will pop up a few times during an episode. Hulu organizes clips into TV and Movies and is more structured than YouTube. Networks, such as ABC, give Hulu permission to run the episodes. While a user can create an account on Hulu, they may not upload their own videos. They can only use their account to contribute to reviews and discussions, subscribe to certain shows and movies, have Hulu friends and make recommendations. Hulu videos are also only available to users located in the United States. I use Hulu to subscribe to certain shows, because I normally don’t have the time to watch it when it comes on TV. They send me an e-mail when new episodes are uploaded.

Veoh:

I had never heard of Veoh before and found it difficult to use. Veoh is split into different parts: TV shows, Movies, Music, Channels and Groups. I went to the “Educational and How-To” channel and very inappropriate videos came up. This site is not trustworthy and I will not use it again. When I finally found an appropriate video, an episode of “Who’s the Boss?” it took a while to load and then showed a 30 second advertisement. It never had to buffer once it started and didn’t freeze. There were 2 “commercial” breaks. Veoh allows users to download a Veoh Player , entitled the “Veoh Video Compass” and download the videos. You can share them via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace. You can flag videos or add them to favorites.

America needs the Special Olympic Spirit

Well, I'm pretty new to this whole "blogging thing." But ya know, I like to write so I figured I'd give it a shot.

I'm so busy with school, work and organizations that I don't have much time. But it'll be nice to have a place to write my thoughts every now and again.

Lately, this is what has been on my mind:
The President and his comment on the Special Olympics
. I've heard arguments that "our President doesn't have to be 'Politically Correct,' he just has to do his job" and "we should be more concerned on his policies than a small joke that fell flat." To me, Obama's remark shows me that the American people are still not completely accepting of those with intellectual disabilities. It goes to show me that Special Olympics supporters still have a lot of work to do. Special Olympics athletes are instilled with the American spirit. I think it's about time Americans are instilled with the Special Olympic spirit because let me tell you, there's nothing quite like it.

Special Olympics has taught me selflessness, patience and love in ways that I never could have experienced otherwise. My brother, Brice is an athlete and I know I wouldn't be the same without him.

I'll close with an e-mail I received from Special Olympics discussing the recent media events:

This is a teachable moment and our lessons have never been more urgent or more valuable. Today, Special Olympics is the world's most powerful movement promoting the dignity and value of all people. Inspired by the courageous examples of 3 million athletes in more than 180 countries competing in 30,000 events each year, Special Olympics is a community-building, life-changing experience through year-round sports competition, health, education and inclusion opportunities.

Events of recent days have reminded us all that we must rededicate ourselves to this vision and to empowering our athletes to show it.

We went to our athletes to ask them for their guidance and insight. As always, they speak best for themselves.

  • "These are tough times. So many of our athletes never get the chance to train and compete because programs are being cut, especially in poor countries. We need your support. You don't have to give much, but anything you give is a lot to us. Please donate." - Loretta Claiborne
  • "I know everyone makes mistakes, but now we need everyone's help. I'm asking everyone to Spread the word to end the word." - Eddie Barbanell
  • "Everyone should try to volunteer or at least cheer at Games this spring and summer. There are Games everywhere. We can teach the world, but you have to come out and volunteer."
Have a great day!

Thanks and Gig 'em
